Band of the Week - O.A.R. (Of A Revolution)

Posted by dannyp on 12/06/2010 09:58:00 PM in , ,
This alternative rock/jam band group formed at during their time at the Ohio State University after four of the five members started the band in their high school years in Rockville, Maryland.

Th band consists of Marc Roberge (vocals, guitar), Chris Culos (drums, percussion), Richard On (guitar, backing vocals), Benj Gershman (bass guitar), and Jerry DePizzo (saxophone, guitar, snare drum kit, backing vocals). The band has enjoyed much success due to the transfer of music through the internet as well as having songs relate to those in high school and university.

O.A.R. has released six studio albums (The Wanderer (1997), Soul's Aflame (2000), Risen (2001), In Between Now and Then (2003), Stories of a Stranger (2005), All Sides (2008)) and four live albums (Any Time Now (2002), 34th & 8th (2004), Live from Madison Square Garden (2007), Rain or Shine (2010)). The one thing that sets O.A.R. apart from other bands is their ability to produce a sound greater than or equal to the sound from the studio album. Some great things about their live songs are that they will add introductions, bridges, or even change some of the lyrics to make that specific performance unique for the fans.

Below is one of my favourite tracks from them titled Wonderful Day from Stories of a Stranger

New Album Reviews

Posted by dannyp on 11/15/2010 07:58:00 AM in , , , , , ,
Three new albums came out this past October from some of my favourite artists, Kings of Leon, Linkin Park, and The Arcade Fire. Below are my initial reactions to the new albums from these artists.

Kings of Leon - Come around sundown
This album sounded like Kings of Leon were trying to get old fans back by integrating their new style that we heard in Only by the Night with the style most fans grew and loved in Because of the Times or Aha Shake Heartbreak.  This integration did not work very effectively, in my opinion, and produces another album that fans of the old hits such as Fans, My Party, Mcfearless, won't enjoy since they have yet again let out that old sound that defined Kings of Leon.

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns
Linkin Park have once again produced a sound that defines their unique style. Similar to the album Minutes to Midnight, they have some upbeat tracks along with some that slow down the mood. Nonetheless, Linkin Park continues to impress with their new album and a North American Tour announcement today at Noon EST. With Linkin Park producing these types of albums fans will continue to show their support for a great band.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
The third studio album from this band was a knock out similar to their first two albums Funeral and Neon Bible. The Arcade Fire maintain their style and produce another great album that all fans will enjoy. With hits on this album such as Deep Blue, Ready to Start, and Empty Room, it is easy to see how fans can say that they enjoy the way Arcade Fire produces albums. Contrary to Kings of Leon, they have maintained their original sound and never disappoint fans by producing new albums.

Posted by dannyp on 9/28/2010 09:10:00 AM in , , ,
Satellite Stories is an indie pop band based out of Oulu, Finland, that provides an new energetic feel to their music. The band confesses that they enjoy the party scene and that it why their music has influence from electronic dance music.  Other bands with a similar style include Tokyo Police Club and Two Door Cinema Club.

As of right now the only two songs you can find from this great band are Kids Aren't Safe In The Metro (featured below) and Helsinki Art Scene. Hopefully when their EP debuts some new songs will appear, but for now enjoy the songs we have.

Edgefest '09 Post Show

Posted by dannyp on 6/21/2009 01:56:00 AM in , , , , , , ,
So Edgefest 09 was yesterday and it was an exciting day of new rock.

The second stage had some great performances by Flash Lightnin', The Johnstones, The Waking Eyes, and Moneen. If you haven't heard of these bands i suggest you go out and buy their CD's, they are awesome.

Arkells had an amazing kick off for the main stage and were followed by other great performances by the Stills & K-OS.
Metric was an interesting performance because they sounded decent but before their last song Emily preached to the crowd about how Canada and the United States need a common national anthem. This led to a speech about how we need to save the planet and then led to their closing number stadium love.

Alexisonfire followed and brought high energy to the crowd. Playing some new tracks from their newest CD, Old Crows, Young Cardinals, coming out tuesday June 23rd. The only downside to their performance was Dallas Green, he didn't seem to be on for all the songs.

AFI was the worst selection for edgefest and killed the buzz Alexisonfire started. Things were wierd because they decided to pull a David Bowe cover.

But the final performance by Billy Talent was unbelievable. From the moment they started to the moment they left they showed the crowd why they were the perfect selection as the headliners. They came in and mentioned how it was a dream come true, since six years ago they were playing at edgefest on the third stage as the first band. Billy Talent rocked the crowd with some of their old tracks and provided us with a taste of what's in store next month when Billy Talent III comes out.

Overall it was a great day even though the rain came and went, turning the grass to mud.

Can't wait until edgefest '10.
